The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Collectible

!±8± The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Collectible

Located on Hatteras Island, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and sits near the community of Buxton, in the Outer Banks Region of North Carolina. This is a group of small islands that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Mainland. This island chain protects a number of inlets and coastal sounds, and with the exception of the Diamonds Shoals, the currents of the Atlantic made ship travel quite excellent. Because the nearby warm Gulf Stream currents collide with the cold Labrador Current, powerful sea swells and ocean storms are an often occurrence.

There are a number of ships that have run aground here because of shifting sand bars, including the famous Civil War ship, the ironclad USS Monitor. This area became known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Because of this, and many other factors, congress authorized the construction of the lighthouse around the mid 1800s. The actual lighthouse was constructed with over one million bricks, and built between 1868 and 1870. Standing 200 feet high, it is the tallest lighthouse in America, and 23rd tallest lighthouse in the world.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of operational lighthouses in the area. The automated light is seen every seven and a half seconds, and on a good day can be seen twenty miles away, with an official range of 24 miles with optimal conditions. After a number of years of renovations, the National Park Service now allows tourists to climb to the top, from the third Friday in April until Columbus Day. If you are planning a climb, then know that it is going to be a bit of a strain, being the equivalent of 12 stories high. Although there is two way traffic on the stair case, there is only one hand rail.

For those who collect lighthouse memorabilia, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse should be one collectible you need to include in your collection. One of the best collectible dealers is online at Compass Rose. They offer a variety of different hand crafted collectibles, one of them is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse mail box. This can be a truly one of a kind collectible for your home, and is made to last the test of time, just like the real thing. Unlike other materials, the lighthouse itself is made from stucco, which will resist humid, damp, or even salt water areas. This material is also used in all of the customized lawn lighthouses. The mailbox itself is made by Rubbermaid, a quality company you can rely on. It even has a real river rock stone feature added to it for accent. The lighthouse light itself even includes a self contained solar light, so you don't have to worry about electricity.

This Cape Hatteras Lighthouse collectible measures 31.5" high, 12" wide and 22" long, and costs just 9. It would make a wonderful addition to your lighthouse collection, or even as a gift for a friend or loved one. It is just one of the many different collectible items that are offered through Compass Rose.
